How to make this interesting…

With the awesomeness that was our Radio Radio show behind us (pictures and videos to come), we’ve set out to record an album.

We’ve all recorded quite a bit in studios and at home with past band members and past bands, and we recorded the guitars, keys and spacey ambience ourselves on our new single, “Time & Space,” available for FREE download on our Bandcamp page, but we’ve never actually made a full finished record on our own, without a studio, without an engineer and without all the expensive equipment studios often offer.

So this is going to be quite a learning experience for us. We’ve already grown quite a bit, and it’s helped us see our music and playing in different ways.

It’s going to be quite an adventure, and we’ll at least try to make it interesting by sharing our experience with you here.

Two Indianapolis Shows Coming Up

Hey everyone,

Sorry there hasn’t been much posting on here over the past couple of months. You’re probably wondering what’s going on with the new songs, shows, recording, finding a bassist, etc.

As you may recall, we went into the studio back in early December to record two songs. The goal was to have something great to hand out at shows to get more people talking about us. Today, we’re happy to report that the project is back on track.

We’ve partially rerecorded one of the songs on our own, and we’re now working with our good friend, the talented Dave Grodzki to get these mixes where we want them…

…and before we play Radio Radio with Borrow Tomorrow on Friday, April 19. The goal is to have at least one (if not both) of the songs mixed and burned on CDs to hand out for FREE at the show.

The Melody Inn, Wednesday, April 10

We’ll be playing The Melody Inn on Wednesday, April 10, with a really talented local band, The Bearded Lucys, as well as Gill and The Pinkerton Raid. The Pinkerton Raid are a pretty great indie folk band from North Carolina, and we’re excited to be welcoming them to Indianapolis. We hope you will, too.

Music starts at 9 pm on Wednesday. Door is $5. Must be 21 or older.

Radio Radio, Friday, April 19

We’re absolutely giddy to be playing Radio Radio on Friday, April 19. We’ve been wanting to play here for awhile now and, until now, it just hasn’t happened.

Former Glass Halo bassist Dave Grodzki will be filling in as our bassist for this show, and we have an incredible set list planned, so don’t miss it!

If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, you’ll definitely want to do that.

Tickets can be purchased at the link to Radio Radio’s website for $10 or for $7 from us directly, either in-person, by messaging us on Facebook or Twitter, or by emailing us at booking@andawaytheygo.com.

Doors open at 8 pm and we play at 9 pm. Must be 21 or older.

Recording…Our Own Way

The last few months (and the last few years) have really been a big learning experience for us. One really big thing we’ve learned is that at our level, with our funding, the only way to make the record we hear in our heads is to do it on our own, without using a big studio or hiring an engineer to do all the tracking for us.

So, starting right after the Radio Radio show, we’ll be retreating to our recently set-up (well, it’s sort of a work in progress) home studio to start working on a full-length album like we’ve never made before.

For this album, we’re going to be doing a number of things different, including:

  • Recording more songs than will go on the album–In the past, we recorded everything we had and put it all on the album. This time, we’re going to write and record a ton and then decide what best makes the cut. (So be on the lookout for outtakes!)
  • Taking our time–Recording in studios on a tight time frame with a small budget meant you got an album that was pretty close to what we sound like live. That won’t be the case with the album we’re working on now.
  • Experimenting with other sounds and instruments–The same time and budget constraints that kept us from doing much studio experimentation meant minimal overdubs of different sounds, keyboards, percussion, strings, horns, etc., and while we can’t guarantee they’ll all be featured (after all, the song dictates what it needs, not us), this is going to be a well-thought out album that you’re going to love listening to as much as we enjoyed making.

And, we’ll be posting a lot of studio updates, sneak-peaks, listens and more!

Come out to the Melody Inn and Radio Radio. These will be the last shows we play for quite awhile, so this is your chance to see us before, and you’ll be getting a free CD to have something to listen to while we’re working on the full abum! Plus, any money we make from the show will be put back into making the album, so it’s really a win-win for everyone!

Hope to see you guys at one or both of our shows this month!

Acoustic Show in Ohio this Friday

Sorry for our silence the past month or so. We’re still looking for a bass player, but we’re not resting. We’re currently working on getting our mixes of “Time & Space” and “The Story of Her Life” perfect, preparing to start home recording our next album, writing new songs, working out some new covers for all of you, and getting reading to play our first show in a few months.

So, it is with great pleasure that we announce that we’ll be playing at The Coffee Pot in Greenville, Ohio, this Friday, February 22 from 7 pm to 9 pm. And not only is there no cover, but it’s an all-ages show, too.

We’re really excited to be playing The Coffee Pot this Friday, and we’ve learned a few new covers for the show, which we’d love to name for you, but that’d spoil the surprise. You’ll just have to hear them for yourselves this Friday.

It’s going to be at least another month before our next show, so do your best to make it out. We promise that we’ll make it worth your while!

A new year…a new bassist?

Well, it’s a new year and we’ve got a lot of great things ahead of us. We’ll soon be in possession of final mixes of our new single, and we’re planning to do a Kickstarter campaign to help us earn the funding we need to record the album you’ve all been waiting for. But as of three days ago (yep, New Year’s Day…a great start, right?), we are looking for a bassist.

Shocked? Us, too. This came as a total surprise to us and we didn’t see this coming. We have one show in January (at Indy’s Jukebox on Friday, January 25) that Jon will be playing with us, but after that, he’ll be done. So if you’re a talented, creative bassist, or if you know a talented, creative bassist, we’d love to hear from you.

All we’re looking for is someone who is talented, creative, flexible and motivated. We want someone who wants to create new music with an open mind, and who understands that making it as a band takes a lot of hard work–not all of which is always fun, and someone we’ll enjoy spending a lot of time with. If you’re interested, email us at booking@andawaytheygo.com, or message us on Facebook or Twitter.

And if you’re a just a fan, who doesn’t play bass or know a bass player, don’t worry. We’ll get through this and we’ll be better for it.

Happy Holidays from And Away They Go

Hey everyone,

The four of us want to wish you all a fun, safe and happy holidays, and to do so, we did a little song for you all!

2012 is almost over and we’ve accomplished quite a bit–new branding/imagery, a new website, we’ve recorded two new songs that we’re really proud of (stay tuned for details), and picked a new drummer. We’ve also played with some great bands, and in some killer venues (Martyr’s in Chicago was probably our favorite).

But there is more to do…a LOT MORE. 2013 is going to be a busy year for us. We’ll be spending the next month or so working on more songs for our next album, which we hope to record sometime in the coming summer and release in the fall, as well as preparing to release the songs we recorded, and getting a Kickstarter campaign up and running to help fund our album because, let’s face it, we need all of your help with this. Making a record isn’t cheap, especially when you’re doing it the right way (we plan to record far more than will go on the album, that way we can make sure you get the best, most cohesive album possible), but we are determined to make it happen this year.

In the coming months, we’ll be posting a lot of updates on where we stand so all know, because you’re a part of this too.

From the bottom of hearts, thank you for all of your continued support and for believing in us.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

-Eric, Aaron, Allen and Jon
